Drawing/Painting Plans
This is great for beginners who are just starting out to learn to draw or paint the human face. Pencil handling and shading techniques will be taught along with analyzing measurements of human head construction using references such as Andrew Loomis, Bargue and John Vanderpoel. We can utilize photos and master drawings, and then transfer to a live model. These lessons ease the transition to drawing and painting from a live model.
Sample lesson plans for drawing:
Week 1: Students will learn to sharpen charcoal pencils as well as how to hold the pencils. Work from the photo & master drawing references with forward facing head. Measure and place the facial features & planes using simple shapes, utilizing curved and straight lines. Will refer to some basics of anatomical structure. (references such as : Andrew Loomis, Rubins)
Week 2: Work from photo & master drawing references with a side view of the head. Map out the a side view of the head with simple block-ins, utilizing curved and straight lines. We will examine placement of facial features in relationship to each other from the side view. Study some basics of anatomical structure from side view. (references such as: David K Rubins, Andrew Loomis)
Week 3: Work from photo & master drawing references of a ¾ view of a head. Map and measure the simple block-ins. Learn placement of facial features in relationship to each other, and review the anatomical structure from ¾ view. (references: Walt Reed, Andrew Loomis.
Week 4: Work from photo & master drawing references of the head in rotating positions. Placement of the horizontal, vertical and angles from rotated views. Learn placement of facial features in relationship to each other, and analyze some anatomical structure.
Week 5: Work from live model to apply week 1-4 concepts. Simple lay-ins. 20 minute poses. Learn to measure angles and distances with pencil or brush handle.
Week 6: Work from live model and focus on separating the shapes. Use lighting on model to create darks and lights. Teach students to squint and separate shapes into 2 values, white of paper & medium gray. Learn basic shading techniques with the charcoal pencil. 20 minute poses.
